Abstract Inspired by Francis of Assisi’s tender evocation of Sister Water, this essay uncovers the tendency of biblical language to personify natural phenomena, with particular attention to water in its many forms. The Bible’s multiple evocations of “living water” are offered as an antidote to the tendency in traditional theology to view water as inanimate, or, conversely to spiritualize water for its symbolic or mystical value. Through the lens of Christian animism, the essay explores the meaning of water as a source of fertility and moves through the understanding that water is necessary for life to the insight that human and non-human beings are actually living embodiments of water.

Keywords Bible, Water, Ecotheology, Thealogy, Christian animism.
